INTRODUCTION
The
principal mission of museum institutions is collecting and storing of material
and non-material cultural heritage. This task was given to the Museum of the
Kłodzko Region, which was founded in 1963.
Two
departments of the museum – Art
Department and Historical
Department were to collect cultural achievements within the scope of history,
ethnography, archeology, numismatics, medallic art, craft and art, mainly from
the Kłodzko region. Geological – Geographical Department, founded in 1977,
collected natural specimens. The Library was set up in 1988 and was given the
task to collect books and develop the centre of information about the region.
At the end
of the first year of its activity the Museum registered the number of 570
items. Most of them had been collected and stored before the founding of the
institution. It should be emphasized the idea of foundation of the Kłodzko
museum originated on the initiative of inhabitants themselves, without any
top-down inspiration. Therefore, the firs acquisitions were mainly gifts from
the inhabitants. Within 45 years the collection increased and reached the
number of 9504 items (end of 2007), excluding the Library.
The
exhibits from the first years of the Museum’s activity were usually the germs
of today’s collections of archive records, tinware, graphics and paintings,
seals, numismatic, works of medallic art and maps. Later, the Museum expanded
the range of its interests and began to collect glass, furniture, sculpture,
iconography records of the Kłodzko region as well as clocks, which became the
attraction despite the fact that they are not directly connected with the
region.
Exhibitions
organized by the Museum created opportunities to present its collections and
issue catalogues of clocks, artistic glass as well as maps and plans of the
region.
